Host A French Student

Hosting a French student in your own home is a beneficial experience for you, your family, and the student. The French student comes to Australia to improve his or her English, and also experience another culture, family and lifestyle. 

Program Length: Students come to Australia for periods of 5 or 10 weeks, although we do have students who come for longer, so if you are prepared to host for longer, then let us know. Most of our students arrive during the June-August period.

Ages: The French students are usually between 14 and 17 years old so it is important that one of your children is a similar age.

Program content: The French student will attend school in Australia, with one of the children in the host family, hence the requirement that there is a child of the same age in the family. 

About the French Students: All French students coming to Australia with AFX have applied and undergone an interview in which their suitability for the program is determined. Students are expected to be open to the challenges of being in another country. 

Upon receiving your application, a member of the AFX team will also come to visit you in order to understand better your family way of life and to know as mush as possible about the child who will be the official correspondent of the French applicants. This procedure helps us organise a good match between the Australian and French correspondents, not only making sure that they are the same age but also that they share interests and hobbies in common. 

The French student is expected to arrive with enough pocket money. 

Requirements to become a host family: Your family must be welcoming and ready to integrate a French student into you family life. As a host family you won’t be paid for hosting but we ask the French candidate to come with enough pocket money to cover their personal spending, outings and incidentals. You will be expected to provide the French correspondent with 3 meals per day and to accommodate them in a private bedroom.

It is not required that anyone in your family speak French or learn French, but if you do, then that is great too! 

Prior to applying for hosting please contact your child’s school to get a verbal agreement to host the French student.

As a host family we will also require that all adult family members must undergo a Police Check or hold a valid Working With Children Card. 

AFX Support and Services: AFX will provide you with the profile of a candidate that suit your family lifestyle and match your child personality and age.

An AFX representative will be present at the airport for the arrival and departure of your French correspondent. We also ask you to come collect your French candidates from your closest airport.

During the French candidates stay, AFX will call the candidate at least two times and be contactable 24/7 by you or the French student if necessary. 

You will also receive a introductory host family package including: AFX Hosting Guide; a prepaid mobile phone and SIM Card for the French Student; a French-English dictionary; a book on France and French Culture; and a book on Australia and Australian Culture for the French Student.
